ASTRAL KNIGHT 2024
Astral Knight 2024 and Saber Knight: Strengthening Allied Defense through Integrated Air and Missile Defense Exercises
Astral Knight 2024 (AK24) and Saber Knight are critical military exercises that took place in Europe, underscoring the U.S. European Command’s commitment to enhancing Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) and overall readiness across NATO forces. AK24, conducted from May 8 to 15, involved nearly 5,000 Allied personnel and over 50 aircraft from Lithuania, Poland, the U.K., and the U.S., demonstrating the collective defense capabilities of NATO nations through rigorous, theater-wide training.

Concurrently, the 480th Fighter Squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base executed Saber Knight, a readiness exercise focused on air base defense and Agile Combat Employment (ACE). This exercise simulated complex scenarios in contested environments, pushing the squadron to operate under challenging conditions while defending against simulated threats, including cyber attacks and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) incidents.
One of the highlights of these exercises was the 480th Fighter Squadron’s rapid deployment of six F-16CM Fighting Falcons to NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen. These aircraft, integral to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s (USAFE) Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) missions, showcased their versatility and readiness to respond to any conflict swiftly. The success of Saber Knight was further bolstered by the support of the 100th Air Refueling Wing, whose KC-135 Stratotankers provided essential aerial refueling, enabling extended operations over the Baltic region.

In addition to their operational achievements, the exercises fostered early collaboration and integration among NATO forces, enhancing interoperability and readiness for future missions. The challenging conditions, including the establishment of a temporary ’tent city’ for personnel at Geilenkirchen, demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of the participating forces. These exercises not only validated the 480th Fighter Squadron’s IAMD capabilities but also reinforced NATO’s deterrence posture in the region.
Overall, Astral Knight 2024 and Saber Knight exemplify the commitment of U.S. and NATO forces to maintaining robust defense capabilities through continuous, high-stakes training and collaboration. By integrating IAMD operations and testing ACE strategies, these exercises strengthen the collective security framework of NATO and ensure that Allied forces are prepared to meet any threat head-on. The experiences and lessons learned from these exercises will play a crucial role in enhancing future cooperation, solidifying NATO’s position as a formidable and unified defense alliance.
